An Afrofuturist Fantasy

Taking inspiration from Afrofuturism’s practice of unearthing lost histories and projecting imaginary, yet productive, futures, this photo series, ‘An Afrofuturist Fantasy’, explores the multifaceted nature of the concept. Scene 1 draws on the romantic and surreal elements of Afrofuturism whilst scene 2, ‘A Safe Space’, portrays the ‘Black domestic space’. Familiar rituals are depicted against traditional fabrics, which is then juxtaposed with a distinctive ‘London’ aesthetic. London is at the heart of these images. They seek to explore how, as a place, it has come to symbolise the unapologetic celebration of black culture.
